When you next go on vacation, try to get more walking in if you want to explore your new destination properly. While it’s easier to hire a taxi and travel from one attraction to the other, it’s also easy to miss out when you do this.
Instead, give urban hiking a try and get a better feel for the place where you are staying. Here are some tips for doing this properly.
Plan a Basic Route
The first thing you’ll want to do is plan out a basic route of where you want to go and what you want to see, and you can do this using a tool like Google Maps. The trick here, however, is to be flexible.
While you don’t want to walk into a dangerous area or misjudge the distances and end up getting exhausted, you don’t want to be too strict either. The best thing to do is list down a few attractions that you’d like to see and work out the distances between them, then go exploring.
Historic areas of cities are especially good to explore on foot because they often pack in various sites of interest. For example, if you are staying in St. Augustine in Florida, there is an excellent historic area to explore, which is easy to visit on foot when you stay somewhere like the Courtyard Marriott.
Prepare Your Rucksack
Before you start exploring, pack your rucksack with everything you will need, including snacks, drinks, sunscreen, sunglasses, and anything else you might need for a day of exploring. That way you know you will be comfortable no matter where your travels take you.
Take Your Time
One of the secrets to urban hiking is to take it slowly. There is no rush, so give yourself plenty of time to explore, and don’t worry if you end up spending longer walking than you planned to. The fun is in discovering new places in your own time and own way.
Be Flexible with Your Plans
Don’t be too rigid with your plans. You might have a few things to see on your list, but allow yourself to be distracted. There are lots of great cities to see on foot, and wherever you go you will have plenty to see, but don’t try to cram everything in.
The beauty of walking is that you might notice things that you would definitely have missed in a car, so stop and admire things that capture your attention.
Observe the Details
Have an open mind as you walk around and look out for little details. There are little things that other tourists will probably miss, so try to look beyond the main highlights of your destination.
Go wandering in places where there are no attractions listed in the guidebook (as long as the areas are safe to walk). Watch the local people, look at the ordinary buildings, and get a real feel for the place.
Speak to People
The other great thing about walking is that you are likely to meet more people this way. Be open and friendly to locals you come across. Take the time to talk to them, and you might find that they have lots of interesting things to tell you, including things to see and do.
Discover New Things on Foot
When you next go on vacation, try to spend some time exploring it by foot. There are so many advantages to walking around on foot rather than taking a taxi or driving a rental car.
So if you are staying in a city, pack your bag, plan a basic route, and start walking to see your destination in the best way possible.
